A camp was held to experience AI and big data under the theme of the World of Deep Learning, the Future of Machine Learning.

The 2023 Winter Big Data Camp was held from January 8th to 12th, 2024. It was hosted by the JBNU Big Data of the COSS  (Convergence and Open Sharing System) and held at the JBNU International Convention Center. The camp accommodated about one hundred students from universities participating in the Big Data camp of the COSS. The theme of this camp was the World of Deep Learning, the Future of Machine Learning. As AI (Artificial Intelligence) has emerged as an important technology and is used in many fields, this camp elected to explore deep learning and machine learning, the technologies that enable AI to operate. Commencing on the 8th with an induction ceremony and team formation, the subsequent days of the 9th and 10th were dedicated to theoretical training for AWS (Amazon Web Services) Deep Racer. Practical exercises for AWS Deep Racer took place on the 11th, followed by an awards ceremony on the 12th. Among the diverse programs offered, noteworthy activities were a car race utilizing AWS Deep Racer and the comprehension and implementation of RL (Reinforcement Learning) algorithms. For the car racing game, the goal was for students to code independently, collect data, gain practical experience, and make the car run quickly on a designated track. This is designed to allow students to experience the abstract concept of big data in real life. Students worked hard until late at night to complete their team's car race course.

Kang Sung-taek from the Department of Information and Engineering, who led the winning team, mentioned how important AI has become in this day and age, but how he is unable to find many learning opportunities around him. While he was exploring AI educational opportunities, he found out about this camp. He attributed the success of his team to the open exchange of feedback among his team members, emphasizing the role of collaborative discussion in achieving victory. He added, “I learned so much about RL and I want to participate again next time.”

Although it has not been confirmed yet, the JBNU Big Data of the COSS is planning to open another big data camp in 2024 or 2025.
