Students are complaining of poor Wi-Fi connection.

The General Student Council conducted a survey about the “inconvenience of JBNU Wi-Fi” from June 7th to June 14th. According to the survey, 312 of 332 (94%) students responded that they experience inconvenience when they use the Wi-Fi. The issue is mostly about the slow WiFi connection and the weak Wi-Fi signal. After the survey, The General Student Council contacted the Information and Computing Technology Center. According to the Information and Computing Technology Center, the major problem with Wi-Fi is that there are many buildings that do not have high-performance wireless Wi-Fi equipment. The center said, “There are restrictions on using it because there needs to be more than 2,500 AP (Access Point) installed, but there are only about 1,200 APs now.” Recently, in February, about 150 Wi-Fi routers were replaced and so far this year, 1,200 Wi-Fi routers have been replaced.

The center is trying to replace outdated Wi-Fi equipment whenever they have the budget. However, to replace the remaining 1,500 Wi-Fi routers, JBNU needs to increase the budget by at least three billion won. Therefore, it is expected that it will take time to replace all the Wi-Fi equipment. Until then, if you as a student experience any inconvenience due to WiFi problems, you can contact the Information and Computing Technology Center. They will solve the Wi-Fi speed and connection problem by adjusting the channel signal intensity. Relating to the budget problem, they are striving to secure the budget every year, but the priority of installing more WiFi equipment is falling behind the priorities of various other projects at the university. The center has promised to expand the Wi-Fi service if the budget is secured, and meanwhile they are preferentially monitoring the lecture room for students’ convenience. In addition, The General Student Council is discussing the budget problems with the Office of Student Affairs and Office of Facility Management.
