The JBNU volunteer program, the “2023 JBNU Summer Season Countryside Volunteer Work (newly named JBNU Forest)” was held from June 21st to 24th, in the whole area of Namwon city, hosted by The General Student Council. This volunteer work was to help with farming during the summer season which requires much work. The year before last, it was canceled due to COVID-19. Therefore, this year many students participated, so the application period was closed earlier than the original deadline. Students had to apply in teams of at least four to twenty people, and as a result, a hundred JBNU students participated as volunteers. Each team was separated and sent into various villages in Namon and did different work. On June 21st, before the volunteers left for Namwon, the opening ceremony was held at JBNU New-Silkroad Center. In the opening ceremony, participants received T-shirts, hats, and name tags. They were also informed about safety rules and precautions. Finally, their four days and three nights of volunteer work commenced!

Choi Ji-won, from the College of Nursing volunteer club, participated in this volunteer work with some club members. She went to Ducksil village, Namwon City and worked in grape farming. At first, she worked on thinning out grapes. As the grapes grew, some grapes in the cluster burst due to pressure. Since burst grapes are less valuable, grape thinning is imperative to get highquality grapes. She also organized the elongated grape branches in such a way that the nutrients could go to the grapes, not the branch. After farming, she realized that grape farming is very strenuous, but at the same time, she felt proud of herself and felt a sense of gratification. She said, “After farming, we ate food with the elders in the village. It was like a small party. The volunteer work was hard because the weather inside the greenhouse was sweltering, but it was exciting since it was a new experience for me. I want to participate in this volunteer work again.” Under the hot sunlight, a hundred JBNU students became unified by doing volunteer work together. After participating, the volunteers gained a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
