AI (Artificial Intelligence) is progressively developing at present. It has developed from the automation of physical labor to the automation of mental labor. Chatbots are an example of the automation of mental labor and they can be used for various functions. As a student, you might be wondering how they can be used for studying. Read on, and you will learn about chatbots and how to use them wisely.

● Introducing Chatbots

According to IBM (International Business Machines Corporation), the “chatbot” is a computer program that uses AI and natural language processing to understand users’ questions and automatically respond to them, simulating human conversation. In the past, chatbots were preprogrammed to give automatic answers to questions. Yet currently, the chatbot uses advanced AI tools that are based on machine learning and deep learning to develop knowledge for interpreting questions, giving responses, or predicting what users need. Thus, chatbots can answer complex questions, and give responses that humans cannot always predict.

Let’s see an example of the chatbot called ChatGPT. It is developed by OpenAI which is an enterprise developing safe and beneficial AI.

Prompt: Here we have a book, nine eggs, a laptop, a bottle and a nail. Please tell me how to stack them onto each other in a stable manner.

ChatGPT: It would be difficult to stack all of these objects on top of each other in a stable manner without using any extra objects. The book and laptop are likely too large and heavy to stack on top of the eggs without damaging them. The bottle and nail may be too small to provide a stable base for the other objects.

Here is one possible way to stack the objects:

- Place the bottle on a flat surface.

- Carefully balance the nail on top of the bottle.

- Place the eggs on top of the nail, making sure they are balanced and not tilting to one side.

- Place the laptop on top of the eggs, again making sure it is balanced and not tilting to one side.

- Finally, place the book on top of the laptop

This stack may not be very stable, so it is important to be careful when handling it. Alternatively, you could try stacking the objects in a different order or using some of the objects as supports for the others to create a more stable stack.

This is an example from <<Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early experiments with GPT-4>> which is a research article conducted by Microsoft Research. According to this, ChatGPT gives a solution to the problem in detail. Thus, people can refer to ChatGPT in their studies to receive assistance.

● Reviews of Students Using ChatGPT

The JBNU Globe conducted reviews of students using ChatGPT: Lee Jeong-hoon in the Department of IT Convergence Mechatronics Engineering and Yun Seon-min in the Department of Mechanical System Engineering.

Q. Did you get any valuable help from ChatGPT?

Lee: “I couldn’t get the right answers to engineering problems from ChatGPT. It has a tendency to focus on one keyword rather than the overall problem. For that reason, it was hard to trust ChatGPT, but it can also be helpful. When I asked it about a theory or concept, it gave me the exact answer.”

Yun: “I use ChatGPT when I need to code and study. I asked it about confusing unit conversion problems and different concepts and it explained them all well. In addition, I can question ChatGPT’s answers again. This helps to modify and enhance its code. Sometimes, ChatGPT gives the wrong information in a plausible way. Therefore, we need to check its answers.”

Q. What do you think about the opinion that “AI replaces the human ability to reason”?

Lee: “I don’t think AI replaces the human ability to reason yet. AI is also made by humans and I doubt if it can ever be used when a high degree of human thought is needed. From now on, chatbots should be used to reduce the labor intensity of humans and we need to think about how we can do this well.”

Yun: “AI resolves problems based on data. Because of this, I think humans are superior to AI on the side of efficiency and productivity. Humans can communicate through interaction with feelings, so we can sympathize and interact socially with others. This is the difference between AI and humans.”

● Professor Oh Il-seok Shares Insight into Chatbots

Professor Oh Il-seok from the Department of Computer and AI at JBNU, has written various books related to computers and AI. He published > earlier this year. Most of the books he published were selected as Outstanding Academic Books by NAS (The National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea), and his book called > was selected for the 2021 Sejong Book, a book recognized for its value in the academic and liberal arts fields. The JBNU Globe had the honor of giving him an interview to gain insight into his knowledge of AI.

Oh said, “the question of how to properly use chatbots for learning can be answered in a variety of ways. For example, a calculator does not only perform simple multiplication, but also calculates logarithms, sines, squares, square roots, etc. As such, the calculator came into the world at a low price and became available to everyone, yet it has emerged as a social problem in relation to the deterioration of human computational ability. There were certain countries that had banned calculators because children’s ability to calculate weakened if they continuously used them. Today, however, calculators are very useful tools for making calculations.” Therefore, chatbots are more modern and powerful tools in this context, and are very useful. They are beneficial, then, to look at them positively and use them well. However, since *hallucinations may occur or biased answers may be given by chatbots, they should be used with careful consideration.

From a positive point of view, chatbots can answer complex questions through *in-context learning and has human reasoning capabilities through *chain of thought, so they can be widely used in various fields such as law, medicine, agriculture, finance, and more. From a negative standpoint, individuals or organizations can abuse chatbot technology. For example, hackers can use it as a tool to create fake news. In addition, biased content can be generated based on the learned data, allowing users to acquire information that may be biased.

Oh added, “as for the opinion that AI technologies such as chatbots will replace human reasoning, it should be viewed as enhancement or augmentation, not replacement.” AI technologies have expanded into new areas to benefit humans, such as the automobile and airplane industries that people take for granted. Oh also mentioned that human intelligence is superior to AI intelligence, including chatbots.

With the advancement of technology, human life has become more convenient. AI has evolved as a useful tool for humans, based on its abilities in learning and reasoning. However, there is an ongoing debate about whether AI will replace human reasoning. While AI is already being used as a convenient tool in our lives, relying on it completely can lead to limitations and issues. It is crucial to use AI appropriately in order to enhance human life.
