part and judge the whole. A ‘hasty generalization’ means to look at a Many thoughtless generalizations about the MZ generation have evoked misconceptions and stereotypes, sparking controversy. Recently, YouTube videos have discussed the negative aspects of the MZ generation. Many people have mistaken all in the MZ generation to have these features and look at them with preconceived notions. As the media continuously broadcasts negative perceptions about the MZ generation, this also can cause youth hatred. According to a newspaper interview, a university student was discriminated against in applying for a part-time job because she is of the MZ generation. Youth hatred may not be a noticeable problem now, but it could become a serious problem in the future.

To combat this growing issue, mutual understanding is essential. The older and younger generations have difficulties understanding each other due to different backgrounds and large age gaps. Learning about the MZ generation can help older generations to understand them better, and vice versa. This mutual understanding can create an atmosphere that can respectfully agree to disagree on certain issues.

The movement to understand the MZ generation is well intentioned, but do not mistake the stereotypes for representing all in that generation. Not every MZ person has the same characteristics. Please make your judgements based on the person themselves rather than in light of prescribed MZ characteristics.

*Millennial and Z generations: As of 2023, generally 30~44-year-olds correspond to the Millennial generation and 12~29-year-olds correspond to the Z generation.
