As the importance of data increases, many students are also increasingly interested in data and computers. JBNU has a team in which students from various departments gathered to participate in the 2021 Data Creator Camp. It's the JBIG team. JBIG is a simple combination of JBNU and big data. This team was created by four students from the Department of Statistics, Sociology, and Economics. Let's find out more about them.

  • What is the Data Creator Camp?

This camp is a practical course to solve problems that may arise in actual business environments through data analysis education and mentoring. It was promoted to spread interest in data analysis and intelligent information technology and cultivate big data knowledge and problem-solving skills.

  • Why Big Data?

The JBNU Globe asked the JBIG team members why they became interested in data.

Moon Woo-hyeok purchased a C language textbook when he was in high school and studied coding alone. Then he came across the language Python, and learned that Python is a great tool for handling data. He started studying because he was fascinated by the fact that he could handle data as he wanted. So, he entered the Department of Statistics and is currently double majoring in computer science because he wants to gain knowledge of statistics.

Meanwhile, Ko Kyung-soo became interested in data as he encountered AlphaGo and big data when he was in high school. Having an interest in this field, he went to the Department of Statistics. He is also double majoring in computer science and is devoted to his studies.

  • How did you participate as a data creator?

The students joined the study group called JBIG, having interest in a common field. Each person was developing their skills by studying within the group and sharing difficulties and achievements. Meanwhile, Ko Kyeong-soo came across information on the 2021 Data Creator Camp on SNS. They participated together because they needed practical experience as well as theoretical study.

Since the departments of the team members are diverse, data can be viewed from a wide perspective. The techniques for dealing with data are also different, so even when there is a problem, they are able to solve it quickly through advising each other. Through this process, they have learned many things from each other.

  • Behind the scenes: the competition

Other competition sites like Dacon and Kaggle conduct projects for a longer time, but Data Creator Camp is different. This is because it is a hackathon competition where participants complete all the questions presented in the short time of three hours and thirty minutes. In this time participants must complete all the steps including understanding code and data, searching, analyzing, coding, and preparing for a presentation. Therefore, collaboration plays a very important role compared to other competitions. The JBIG team was deeply aware of these difficulties in the preliminary round, and knew that they could achieve good results if they prepared well for the finals in advance.

  • What is Dacon and Kaggle

Kaggle is a data contest site created for artificial intelligence or data analysts. Data is posted on the Kaggle site and analyzed with this data. Meanwhile, Dacon can be seen as a Korean-style Kaggle. This site is a Korean site, and data is provided like Kaggle and analyzed with this data.

      Ko Kyung-soo Moon Woo-hyeok

Ko Kyung-soo and Moon Woo-hyeok are steadily conducting related studies such as machine learning and deep learning for data analysts and artificial intelligence-related occupations. In addition, the ongoing study and project experiences will be organized and shared on their personal blogs. They added that if you are interested in data but are unable to access it because it is difficult, they recommended interpreting the baseline codes provided by Dacon or Kaggle. Also, there are various courses related to data analysis on YouTube, so it would be good to refer to them whenever necessary.
