Dotorigol

In the early summer, the JBNU Globe took a stroll along the Jeonjucheon stream. New changes are taking place in the village across Jeonjucheon stream, which has left a mark on many people for many years. Villagers have painted on the wall and worked together to repair their village.

STEP 1 - Dotorigol Bridge

If you walk along the Jeonjucheon stream, you can see the Dotorigol Bridge. It was built in 1999 and connects Dotorigol to the main street of Jeonju. According to Jeonju city data, the word Dotorigol is misinterpreted from ‘Dotdaegol’. The mountain range surrounding the village has two peaks, looks like a ‘dotdae’. It means the mast of a ship in korea. As time went on, the name ‘Dotorigol’ has been using, and it was called Dotorigol in earnest after the Dotorigol Bridge was built in front of the village.

STEP 2 - Murals in Dotorigol

In 2016, soldiers from the Jeonju Battalion, college volunteers, and residents came together to paint traditional cultural murals symbolizing Jeonju on the 300m wall to improve the lives of the villagers. Don’t you feel revitalized even though it’s a quiet, sleepy village? It would be nice to take a breezy stroll with ice coffee or ice cream while feeling the gentle wind.

STEP 3 - Jeonju Chois’ Hwa Sugak and Sowon-am

Hwa Sugak is the house of the eldest son of a family, meaning a place where the family lived for several generations. As you walk by the murals, you can see Jeonju Choi family’s Hwa Sugak at the top of the village. Alongside it, you can see the alters, gravestones, and other family relics.
If you climb up the hill you can see Sowon￾am, a small temple. Feel free to sit and meditate with the sound of birds chirping and the sunlight naturally glowing on your cheeks.

STEP 4 - Ssangdari Hoegwa and Dotorigol Mart

Dotorigol Mart is probably be the first building you will see as you go up from the Jeonjucheon Stream. It is a small mom-and￾pop store where you can enjoy treats like ice cream or a cool beverage. If you turn right facing the store on the main road, you will be on the path to a delicious treat! Ssangdari Hoegwan is a local restaurant which is located in Eoeungol, the adjacent village, recommended by the locals and @misic.korea(a social account that recommends places to eat in Jeonju). From the store, it takes about less than five minutes to go there by bike. There, you can taste the famous ‘cheonggukjang-jjigae’(fermented soybean paste soup) and ‘kimchi-jjigae’(a stew-like dish with Kimchi and other ingredients) as a ‘baekban,’ which is a typical full-course Korean meal. In addition to the many free side dishes, you can also have ‘baeksuk,’ (a steamed chicken soup famously popular on hot summer days) and more.

Dotorigol, an area home to many senior citizens, is being rejuvenated by the love of the residents and the efforts of volunteer students. Since April this year, Jeonju has been implemented the Saeddul-maeul Project with students from JBNU and Seoul Women's University as part of its urban regeneration solution research. Their common goal is to create sustainable villages. Thanks to all kinds of beautiful murals, cozy architecture, and friendly local support, Dotorigol is filled with life and laughter. Why not stop by Dotorigol this summer and bring some color into your life?

TIP
If you are interested in renting a bicycle, try the bicycle rental service Jeonju is providing. There are eight rental shops all over Jeonju, and you can rent them for only 1,000won a day.
