● Chapter 1. Lonely Guide to Peru
Only a couple years ago, there wasn’t much information about traveling to South America. South America was an unusual place to travel until the TV program called Youth over Flowers introduced Peru. It takes over 20 hours to get to Peru, but its view is full of bliss. Here is a travel guide to Peru for people who want to have the hottest winter!

1. General Information about Peru
In Peru, the season is completely opposite to Korea because it is situated in the southern hemisphere, but fortunately, it's not very hot since Peru is located high in the mountains. The main language in Peru is Spanish. As many people can’t speak English even around famous tourist attractions, you may have a little trouble communicating with the natives. Thus, it’s best to study simple Spanish before going to Peru. The currency of Peru is the nuevo sol, or, in short, the sol. One sol is about 300-400 won in Korea. Prices in Peru are quite cheap, but it can be a little more expensive than Korea around some famous tourist attractions.

2. Flight
There's no nonstop flight from Incheon International Airport to Peru, so people usually go to Peru via LA, Vancouver, or Toronto. South America is very far from Korea, so the flight time is very long. That's why the plane ticket price is quite expensive compared to the closer countries. To save money on the airfares, transfer using many planes. In that case, the airfares will usually get cheaper.

3. Places
1) Cuzco
Cuzco is the last capital of the Incan Empire. “Cuzco” means “navel” in Quechua, and it also means ”center of the world”. The city is located at an elevation of 3,400m, so it's a little hard to breathe. It’s best to walk around slowly, and drinking coca tea will be also helpful. The alleys and buildings are so beautiful and peaceful, and many travelers stay for a long time. Plaza de Armas and Mercado Central de San Pedro(it's kind of a market place) are the best place to experience Peruvian food and culture. Moreover, the night view of Cuzco is fantastic. However, it's a little bit dangerous at night, so it would be better not to walk dark alleys alone.
2) Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is the high point of this travel. There are two ways to go to Machu Picchu. One is to take a train and the other is to walk along the track. Taking a car for about three hours from Cuzco, you reach Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo, there is an Inca Train. It's expensive, but the service is very good. Most of all, the train has a glass ceiling, so the passengers can admire the scenery. For those who want to save money, walking along the track is also a good way to go to Machu Picchu. It takes a long time, but the road is not rough so it will be okay to try.
Tips about Machu Picchu.
① It is necessary to book in advance to go to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, from which one can look down on Machu Picchu. In particular, in Huayna Picchu, only 400 people can go inside per day, so a reservation is necessary. Using an ISIC (International Student Identity Card) you can get a discount, but it's possible only on the spot. This is the website to make reservations: www.machupicchu.gob.pe.
② There is no toilet at Machu Picchu. Therefore, everyone has to use the pay toilet located at the entrance. Toilets can be used freely after buying a ticket.
③ They don't sell food inside Machu Picchu and you can’t eat any food. There is a restaurant that sells meals at the entrance, but it's quite expensive, so it is better to have enough food before going in.

4. Food
1) Ceviche
In Peru, it is mandatory to eat ceviche! Ceviche is a Peruvian traditional food. This is a food made of white fish, various types of seafood and vegetables with sour fruit juice like lemon or lime. It's similar to the Korean food Hoe muchim (spicy raw fish salad). Ceviche can be seen almost everywhere in Peru.
2) Sanguche
Peruvian people call sandwiches “Sanguche.” You can choose the vegetables, potato and sauce that go inside sanguche without any additional fee. On the Korean program called Youth over Flowers, “La Lucha” was introduced. La Lucha is the most famous “sangucheria”(sanguche shop) in Peru. Their potato chips are also delicious, so try them!
3) Inca Kola
Inca Kola is the most famous drink in Peru. It is even called the pride of Peru. It tastes like bubble gum or Korean energy drinks.

● Chapter 2. Let’s Leave for Japan!

● Japanese traditional shrine sightseeing
- Kiyomizudera shrine: Kyoto travelers say that this is the most popular temple in Kyoto. It is famous for its wonderful landscape in all four seasons. Inside the Kiyomizudera shrine, there is another shrine called Jiju shrine. It is said that the shrine grants wishes, especially about love between couples and good test scores.
-Yasaka shrine: Kyoto citizens have a feeling of attachment to this temple because the temple is believed to not only prevent citizens from misfortune and anger but also to flourish their business. Also, the festival Gion Matsuri is held every July in this temple.
● Experience of Omamori and Omikuji
- Omamori: This is a talisman on which are written diverse wishes such as those about delivery, safety, passing a test, and more.
- Omikuji: This is a Japanese style of drawing lots to find each person's fortune. You can find your own fortune by choosing one of the wooden sticks which points out one of the five indicators of fortune on a paper. Also, there is a list of items like marriage, learning or love, and it explains what fortune the person who draws the stick would have.

- Japan's three major Onsen
- Dogo Onsen: As the oldest hot spring in Japan, which boasts a history of about 3000 years, it is famous for being an inspiration for the movie Spirited Away.
- Shirahama Onsen: Ancient emperors and many nobles from the past visited this onsen. The onsen is located so closely to the beach that if the waves are high, they can even hit the hot springs.
- Arima Onsen: This onsen has been famous since the Nara period. In particular, there are two types of unique onsens. One is called “Kinnoyu,” which is a gold color onsen that consists of iron and salinity. As for the second type, there is a colorless and transparent onsen called “Ginnoyu.”
● Arrival in Arima Onsen Ryokan (accommodation)
- Ryokan: An accommodation dating back to the Edo period, it consists of a tatami room, shared bathroom, and bathrobes. They also provide yukata and meals consisting of traditional Japanese cuisine, known as “kaiseki.”
-Kaiseki: This is a traditional multi-course Japanese meal. Basically, it consists of one soup and three vegetable side dishes. Generally, the dishes in kaiseki are made with local products produced in each region.

I am now traveling in Istanbul, the great city that is the capital of Turkey. One of my favorite places that I went today was the Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia was originally a basilica that was built in the days of the Byzantine Empire under its most powerful king, Justinian the Great. After Constantinople was taken by the Ottomans, the Hagia Sophia was transformed into a mosque. Nowadays, it is used as a museum. “Hagia Sophia” means “holy wisdom” in Greek. It is said to have been built by professional mathematicians and architects. Through numerous endeavors, the Byzantine building was safe from any natural disasters for hundreds of years. Not only is the structure of the Hagia Sophia surprising, but its exterior and interior are also magnificent. The walls inside the museum are decorated with mosaics and the color of the ornaments brilliant gold caught my eyes. I surely couldn’t believe that this architecture was made in the ’Byzantine Era. However, with no time to catch breath, the glittering blue color shone with the sunlight on the opposite side of structure. This was the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, which is commonly known by the name of “Blue Mosque”. It has many sophisticated decorations, diverse colors and stained glass works that make the interior of the mosque more splendid. It was breathtaking to see all those marvelous architectural elements. In addition, as Turkey has one of the world’s top three cuisines, there were indeed a lot of things to eat. With its unique culture and diverse types of food, it was thrilling to experience all those magnificent things through my own senses.

One of the top 25 things that people regret when they are dying is “not having traveled where I wanted to go.” Many are busy trying to prepare for TOEIC or other certificates. However, this short trip may be the most memorable in the future. Moreover, it can be a time for your own growth with the experience of planning and facing from beginning to end by yourself.
