1. I heard that you have really a special family. Please introduce them to the readers.
If one of my families dropped out, we couldn’t be called real HIPHOP. My father has a sweet but strong voice, so he is optimized to be a rapper. Since my father is too popular, my mother decided to keep watch near him. Thus my mother became a DJ, and she makes people enthusiastic in her club with awesome scratching. My sister loves to scribble on the wall, and nowadays she has become a master of graffiti. Lastly, my little devil brother dances as a b-boy and he stirs the stage.
2. Apparently, you diss other rappers once in a while. Why do you do that?
Dissing is one of the important factors in my world. I say this out of kindness, but most of people regard dissing as a mean thing. Actually, ‘diss’ is short for disrespect. Quite often, some hip-hoppers lose their original intentions and behave as though they are kings of hip-hop. I criticize them sharply to come to their senses. Recently, Korean rapper Swings set up a big fight by provoking the famous Korean singer Simon Dominic using ‘control beat’. Lots of people were interested in this hip-hop war, and I also enjoyed it very much.
3. What do you think about the future of Korean Hip Hop?
It is not strange to see a TV commercial which uses a rap song any more. Also, Korean B-boy crews are the top of the world. I expect that Korean hip-hop will become more popular soon. In the future, we may hear news which is delivered by rapper announcers who wear NEW ERA. Students will learn how to break dance in physical education and the street walls will be covered with graffiti. Wouldn’t it be cool?
Rock
Is your heart beating faster and faster when you hear drums, guitars, and synthesizer? Then, you should enjoy my festival. Thousands of crowds groove and shake their bodies frantically to the intense sound of my music. Let’s jive and juke all night!
1. Does Rock have to play powerful music, shaking your head round and round?
Oh my goodness! I’m afraid that you haven’t heard all of our music yet. People usually mistake us as just macho. No, we are not! My brothers have unique characteristics and they are all different. Of course, our heavymetal brother is our anchor. However, there is a modern rock brother who thinks a lot of sensitivity. He often sings with calm and quiet melodies. Also, many brothers such as blues rock, country rock, punk rock, and alternative rock play music in their styles.
2. Nowadays, the Rock Festival gets tremendous popularity in Korea. How do you feel about it?
First of all, I really appreciate Korean fans. They are the best audience I’ve ever seen. They sing along together loudly, an act called ‘ddechang’. I wondered how they memorize all the lyrics of songs. I cannot forget the crazed atmosphere in Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, Jisan World Rock Festival, and Ansan Valley Rock Festival. When my fans waved their hands and shouted towards us, my breath was almost taken. I felt proud of myself to be loved by so many people.
3. Many rock stars shout out “Rock Spirit.” What is the exact meaning of Rock Spirit?
To explain what rock spirit means, you have to know how I was born. As I can’t stay quiet when I see anything unjust, I made music with a strong beat and defiant lyrics. Thus, the older generation disliked me and tried to suppress me. However, my spirit spread through all youths as they fought against the irrationalities of society. This became the “Rock Spirit” of the day.
