Professor Seol Kyoung-won

“I didn’t graduate CBNU. But if people ask me where my alma mater is, I’d say it is CBNU.” Nobody loves CBNU more than Professor Seol Kyoung-won. Here is an interview with the head master of LINC (Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation), Professor Seol from the Department of Information Material in the College of Engineering.

1. What has been the most remarkable experience since you started teaching at CBNU?
There are so many unforgettable moments in my teaching life. It’s been over 30 years that I’ve worked at CBNU as a professor in the Department of Information Material in the College of Engineering. The most amazing thing is that the first students whom I taught in 1983 often visit me. As every teacher would feel the same, I feel that it is precious to hang out with students. I love talking and communicating with my students. I think that time is the most meaningful moment every day while I do my job.

2. What is LINC? Introduce it to us.
LINC stands for Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation. It is a five-year plan supported by the government. 51 universities are doing LINC business to help students develop their careers. Since 2012, I have been the head of LINC business. We plan many projects for students at a small cost. We give students lectures for exams such as MOS Master, LABView, Photoshop and Illustrator, which are computer certificates. Also, we hold many contests to help students find out interests which they didn’t know they had through invention programs. Moreover, we support funds for official tests such as TOEIC or TOEFL. Visit us at www.linc.jbnu.ac.kr for more information.

3. What do you expect students to be after they go through LINC program?
As you can see, all of these programs are to improve students’ ability. I want them to be more competitive and confident. Even though we are in Jeollabukdo, CBNU LINC has become part of the country’s top class, which means, through LINC, students can get many great opportunities to develop their careers. Whoever tries hard to study should ask for help from LINC because it will be good for their future and will make them shine brighter.

4. While doing work as a professor and the head of LINC, you still have steady research achievement. How can you do these things at the same time?
Yes, I am in charge of those things. However, it doesn’t necessitate that I have to be in every place all the time. Since I started the LINC business, I have always wanted to make a well planned blueprint. If I do so, without financial support from government or after my retirement, all these systems can remain. The system will work fine even if someone else is in charge. I believe that he will achieve his plan because there is a solid basement I settled. This can be applied to other work in my lab, too.

5. You were given an award by the president in 2012. Also, many organizations gave you prizes several times. Why is that?
Since LINC started, I have worked hard to make partnerships with many regional companies. For example, undergraduates could practice at work. With this experience, they could get a job more easily. This kind of project leads to a higher rate of employment. This even contributed to local community by making the economy activated. Not only CBNU itself, but also regional companies and local community have been being developed.

6. What do you want to say to CBNU students?
During vacation, I take my students abroad and visit many countries which have advanced techniques. It’s only about 10 days; however, I want them to see the bigger world and experience new things. The more you see, the more you can dream of. Don’t settle. Make your goal out of Jeonju. One more important thing is to be proud as a CBNU student. CBNU is one of the greatest universities you should be proud of. Why don’t you be the one who makes CBNU’s name value much higher!

There are so many professors who love CBNU like him. Therefore, CBNU is getting better day by day. Also, Professor Seol works hard for the students’ benefit all the time. The passion he showed as a professor who is willing to communicate with students all the time is a true educator’s example.
