“One, two, three, smile!” May, the most charming month to take photos, has come. Parents are busy to click the shutter at their lovely children surrounded by fragrant blossoms. Couples and friends laugh out loud while taking photos in the spring breeze. In this way, photos record people’s smiles and tears. They become precious memories while connecting the past and present. How paramount an invention the photo is! Let’s explore this attractive object from this point on.

 How has the photo been changed?
Do you know when the photograph was invented? Most people think it might have been invented in the 20th century or the 19th at least. Then, they must be surprised at knowing the history of photograph started in Quattrocento (in 15th century Italy) by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists all over the world. He made the beginnings of a camera called ‘obscura’, which means dark room. He used it as means of assistance to draw a picture exactly. In other words, photo was accepted as one of the tools to copy a picture like engraving. At that time, the concept of a photograph was just copying the light that reflected from an object. Photos which modern people think of as printed on film or paper were invented by Jacques Mande Daguerre.
In fact, there is a great diversity of opinion about this point of which one is the first photo. Actually, Joseph Nicephore Niepce, French inventor, took the first photo in 1826. However, its image was hard to discern so it wasn’t recognized as a piece of photography. Then, Daguerre complemented Niepce’s photography technology and acquired exclusive rights in 1839. Therefore, Daguerre’s photo is chartered as the first photo.
At first, a film could include only one photo. As time went by, lots of photos were contained on one roll of film and the color photo was invented instead of black-and-white photo. Printed photos could be passed down if they were preserved well. Following this circumstance, photo became one of the art genres, not a substitute for painting. Then, digital cameras and cell-phone cameras appeared in the 21st century and it caused a great sensation.
Now, people started taking photos as their hobby. Lots of people make photo clubs and they take and research photos together. Also, they share their photos through SNS (Social Network Service) such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As they appreciate mutual photos, they become much better photographers and satisfaction with their life is increased.

 Various Kinds Of Photography
-Bokeh
Do you want to take a picture of beautiful lightning? If so, why don't you try to take a bokeh picture? Bokeh means that picture seems hazy because of not focusing the camera on the subject. To take bokeh picture, you have to change the AF (Auto Focusing) button which located at lens of body to MF (Manual Focusing). Manual focusing is a function that adjusts the focus manually. When you intentionally don't focus on the camera, bokeh, of which shapes are circular or angular, emerges. Also, you can take a bokeh picture of a heart or star shape using a bokeh filter. If you want to take various shapes of bokeh photo in a cheap way, cut paper to the lens size and make shapes you want, then put it into the lens. Then, you can make pretty shapes of bokeh.
-Macro
In picture terms, a close-up is called a 'Macro'. You can see a new world because it magnifies various things that you can’t see with the naked eyes. When you take a macro picture, it is good to use a simple background because it accentuates subjects like flowers or bugs. The lens should be brought as close to subjects as possible. Then, set the aperture at the lowest rate. In other words, you should check the minimum distance between subject and lens before taking a macro picture.
-Panning shot
Panning shot is a technique for taking pictures while moving the camera at the same speed as the moving subject. The subject’s motion seems still and only the background is out of focus. It leaves the sensation of speed. Mostly, this effect is used to take photos of fast-moving objects like a motorcycle, car and so on. The most appropriate shutter speed ranges from a quarter second to a thirtieth of a second. If the subject moves from left to right, you should wait in front of the direction of progress of the subject.
- Reflection
As the word means, a reflection photo is taken by capturing the reflection figures on water, windows, or even a car’s hood. The photo shows two worlds like decalcomanie. To take these photos, you have to lower your posture and put the camera in a low position. Also, you should consider the weather. Immediately after it rains is the best time to take photos, except for on a windy day. If there is no standing water, then sprinkle water intentionally.
- Silhouette
You may have heard the word ‘silhouette’ even though you didn’t know the meaning of it. Silhouette means shadow in French. When you take a photo against the light, it can be expressed. The side that is against the light seems black, thus its silhouette is emphasized though details are eliminated. You can take this photo mostly at sunrise or sunset. Also, you have to close the aperture and use spot sidelight mode.

 The Hottest Photographer, Ryan McGinley
Ryan McGinley is the youngest photographer in history who had a private exhibition in the Whitney Museum of American Art at the age of 24. McGinley studied in Parsons School of Design in New York City. He is the most noteworthy candid photography artist following Wolfgang Tillmans, one of the greatest photographers of the 21st century. Due to his recognized artistic value, his works are owned by world-prominent galleries and museums such as the Guggenheim Museum and Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
Ryan’s photographs contain one’s youth, beauty, and freedom instead of depression, rebellion, or defeat of the youth showed by the photographers of the last generation. Although a slight feeling of gloom is shown in his picture, it is only describing the dizziness of youth given to daydreaming. His works were displayed with the title "Magic Magnifier" in Seoul’s Daelim Museum recently. Liberty, purity of the young generation, and the dramatic beauty of one’s liberation are expressed in his photographs with fascinating color. Many Korean youth empathize with what he wants to convey. This exhibition was a real hit and ended as a great success this February.
Recently he has been working in a variety of fields such as collaboration with musicians, fashion, and commercial pictures. For instance, the cover picture for the legendary 5th album of Sigur Ros, Iceland’s best post-rock band, is McGinley’s work. Also, collaborative pictures with Hermes, one of the world’s best luxury goods brand, can be found on its website.

 Tips to Become an Amateur Photographer
- Personal Photo
It is essencial to have adequate exposure settings on a person’s face, which attracts attention. More crucially, the focus of the camera should be on the person’s eyes. Portrait photos fall into five categories which are full shot, knee shot, waist shot, bust shot and close-up shot. Try different compositions considering the model’s expression and balance with background. Moreover, give it a try with a high or low position of the camera. A low angle makes the legs longer and face smaller and makes the model look dynamic, whereas a high angle makes the face bigger and body smaller and makes the model look like a ludicrous cartoon character. However, a good portrait picture should present the model’s personal character and mood. Also, the photographer might have the model take a comfortable pose to have an unaffected picture.
- Scenery Picture
Be careful not to have a tilted picture especially for scenery. A good scenery photo should have a stable composition with detailed harmony of nature. Divide the scene into three or five equal parts. Using a tripod will help to set up the horizontal angle. Furthermore, a lens hood and cable release are auxiliary equipment to take the picture effectively. Under the circumstance of rain or cloudy weather, it is also better to adjust the exposure. Scenery pictures should include the unique image and mood of the place. Also, lower sensitivity settings and tightened iris will express more details.
- Still Photo
Many people take photos of food before they eat it in restaurants or cafés nowadays. You might have tried to take a picture which shows the appetizing appearance by including the texture and exact colors of food. To obtain a picture like that, use light and adjust the white balance properly. Light should be coming from a left or right angle of 45 degrees on the opposite side of the camera. If the food has some height such as with sandwiches and hamburgers, take a picture from a low angle to reveal the contents of them. For food that does not have any height like pizza, take it from a high angle. Also, when taking close-up pictures of things such as flowers or indoor tools, out-focusing is unnecessary. Proper composition highlighting the element and leaving some space are crucial in a still photo.
