Fall is the season which everyone is waiting for the most by far. What do you recall when you hear “fall”? Maybe colorful foliage, golden fields, and newly harvested fruits occur to you. The CBNU Globe has prepared useful information to help you fall into fall here. Now, are you ready to fall into fall?

● Autumn in CBNU

A welcome guest, Autumn, visits CBNU. We can see the autumnal features in various places on campus. In autumn, the CBNU campus creates scenery as beautiful as a maple festival, with the red maple trees and yellow maidenhair trees. The lovely and picturesque scenery makes the whole university become a photo zone.

- The Fountain, the Centerpiece of CBNU
The sunlight shining through maple leaves is spectacular here. CBNU has a roundabout inside its campus. This roundabout is decorated like a small park, so it accentuates the atmosphere of the campus. There are dove houses, so doves are living here. At the fountain in the center of the school and on the lawn, we can feel fall is coming. Here, we can relax on a bench, and young college students can also gather to play on the lawn. The maple trees surrounding the fountain are really enjoyable.

- The College of Commerce, A Place Filled with Romantic Ideals
The next place to introduce is the surroundings of the College of Commerce. It is neither far from the old front gate nor far from the new front gate, so you can walk to this building. From the entrance of the building to the next building there are ginkgo trees and maple trees. Also, between the first part and second part of the building of the College of Commerce, there is the 'Gam-namu Gol' (students often call it 'Gam Gol'), where is full of persimmon trees. When fall comes, there are many fallen leaves and persimmon trees with abundant fruits. The parking lot is almost surrounded by trees. Also, in the back garden, there are round tables and benches made of wood. At lunch time, some students have lunch there. On the way to the College of Commerce, there are even more trees. If you see the campus full of maple leaves in the fall, you can relax both your exhausted body and mind.

- The College of Humanities, A Nice Alley
On the way from the CBNU Cultural Center to the College of Humanities, we can see the clear sky and bright trees. 'In Ben' is another name for the benches in the College of Humanities, one of the most beautiful sections of campuses of all universities nationwide. Here, its surrounding environment is well organized and there are also various beautiful flowers, so this place is popular among the CBNU students. On the road linking the two buildings facing each other, you can see a number of trees and flowers. Behind the first building, there are large maple trees, too. The maple trees in the area of the College of Engineering lose their leaves early in the season, but those in the area of the College of Humanities maintain their bright colors till late autumn.

● Signs of Autumn, Flowers

Autumn is more beautiful and sweet-smelling than any other season because each and every autumn flower has its own color and smell. Don’t you want to know the autumn flowers? Through them, we can feel autumn!

- Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum has the longest history of plants in the Orient and is considered noble as one of the four gracious plants along with plum, orchid and bamboo. Since chrysanthemum does

not bloom in spring or summer but blooms in the autumn, our ancestors compared a man of virtue with nobility and integrity to this flower. There are many chrysanthemum festivals across the country, such as the 'Iksan Ten Million Chrysanthemums Festival’ (October 25th - November 3rd) and the ‘Incheon Dream Park Chrysanthemum Festival’ (September 26th ~ October 6th). Go to these festivals and enjoy autumn’s flavors!

- Cosmos
Cosmos also boosts the mood of autumn. You can often find this flower on the country roads. It is difficult to see it
in the center of the city. Cosmos originally came from Mexico. Generally, this flower can grow up to two meters high and bloom twice a year. Cosmos blooms from late spring to autumn, and it is very easy to grow almost anywhere in the world. "Cosmos" came from the Greek word "Kosmos", which means "order." That refers to decorating a room with flowers since cosmos has been a decorative form for centuries. How about visiting the flower festival to smell the beautiful cosmos? The Seokgok Cosmos Concert is scheduled to open from September 27th to 29th in Gokseong, Jeonnam. Aside from this, cosmos festivals will take place in various parts of the country such as Geoje and Guri. We recommend these festivals to whoever wants to enjoy autumn.

● Savor the Fall
Isn’t the first reason of longing for fall that we can taste new crops of grain and newly harvested fruits? Now let’s check on the various foods matched with the season of harvest.
- Autumn Crops
First of all, buckwheat is one of the familiar grains to us because we eat various foods which are made of it, such as buckwheat noodles and buckwheat cake. Buckwheat is also associated
with the novel ‘In the Buckwheat Flower Time’. When we read this novel, imagining beautiful buckwheat fields, it makes people feel as if they are standing in the middle of a field. While it gives off a romantic mood, it grows well in barren soil, and even in a cold climate. It also has a special vitamin called Rutin which improves the blood wall’s resistance, so it is highly helpful to patients who have vulnerable blood vessels. Plus, five virtues of eating buckwheat have been passed down to us: unique and refreshing flavor, protection against adult disease, beauty treatment, improved mental health, and moderate price. Now, how about eating delicious buckwheat noodles for lunch?

Next, let’s talk about autumn barley. There were poor days from May to the middle ten days of June which were called the “barley hump”, a time when people survived on grass roots. Because of this, people tend to consider barley a symbol of poverty. However, barley has established itself as a “well-being food” now. If you eat only rice and wheat, you can be susceptible to a shortage of vitamin B, so you grow weary easily. However, barley has bounteous vitamin B which makes metabolism brisk and prevents fatigue. The reason that autumn barley is preferred is that it grows in the winter, so the farmer does not have to spray agricultural pesticide. Since is grows in the winter, though, it is a cold food. Therefore, it is not good for people who have weak digestive functions. In spite of cold character, it assuages hardening of arteries and diabetes. It is also very effective for dieting.

- Fruits
When you are asked to recall autumn fruits, you may say apple or pear as usual. However, there are a lot of peak fresh fruits in the autumn besides apple and pear. Among them, pomegranate is a fruit of
the season in autumn. As you know, pomegranate is referred to as a women’s fruit because it has estrogen, which is good for the prevention and overcoming of menopause. In the case of pomegranate, vermilion flowers hang from branches, and it bears fruits around June. As autumn comes, the fruits become ripe. We can take advantage of not only the fruits but also the fruit flesh, the root of tree, and the flowers of the pomegranate.

Jujube is also a fruit that is in season in autumn, although it is less familiar than other fruits. Jujube blooms in June and bears fruit in September, and it is cultivated across Korea. Jujube has a warm character, sweetness, and no poison. Since the old days, jujube has been used with lots of medicinal herbs because it is good at detoxification and harmonizes various tempers of medicines. It also contains about 100 times more Vitamin C than apple and peach, as well as Zizyphic acid, Vitamin B, Calcium, Iron, and other healthful nutrients. Above all, jujube makes internal organs recuperate their function and is good for high blood pressure, kidney function, and alleviating the flu. Isn’t it enough to enjoy jujube in the autumn, then? However, you should be cautious not to eat too much jujube at once since it can hurt your teeth.

-Flavorful Teas

Now it is time to taste teas matched with autumn. Autumn is the best season for enjoying teas. The first tea of autumn is chrysanthemum tea. Since old times, our ancestors enjoyed drinking chrysanthemum tea, regarding it as a
mild, sweet, and nonpoisonous tea. In particular, it can be recommended to university students who are tired and distressed since it contains Vitamin A, Vitamin B, and other sorts of good ingredients. Chrysanthemum, collected very cautiously, is dehydrated between October and November. Although it is not showy, chrysanthemum is aromatic and has a long life. Therefore, people can appreciate the beautiful flowers for a long time if they are kept at hand. It also remains fragrant even after being brewed several times.
As a tip, you can taste chrysanthemum tea more softly by blending it with green tea. Plus, when you brew chrysanthemum tea, try using a transparent tea cup. Then you can enjoy tasting it while also appreciating the beautiful chrysanthemum flower.
Another tea for autumn is persimmon leaf tea. Persimmon is one of the representative fruits of this season and is loved for various ways it can be enjoyed from autumn to winter. Unfortunately, persimmon leaf has received relatively less attention than the fruit. However, it contains bountiful Vitamin C -- 20 times more than a lemon has. It is also good for the change of seasons because it is not susceptible to heat. Furthermore it helps your skin care and makes swelling go down, expediting a diuretic effect. Persimmon leaves for tea are usually made in the months of May and June, whereas persimmon itself is harvested in the fall, because there are vitamin and calcium in the leaf in the highest concentration at that moment.
This is how to enjoy persimmon tea. First, clean fresh persimmon leaves and dry them in the shade. Next, cut them into small pieces and brew the persimmon tea in hot water. If you follow this method, you can enjoy sweet and light green persimmon tea which has been preserved with bountiful vitamins.

● Journeys in Autumn

The Korean peninsula is surrounded on three sides by sea, but also, 70% of the land consists of mountains. There is no season better than autumn to admire such natural tourist attractions. From this point on, let’s talk about some information on several mountains and places to visit, looking around our country from north to south.

- Seoraksan
Starting to the north, there is Seorak mountain (Seoraksan). It is located in Gangwon-do, which has the one of the most outstanding views of maple trees. The blossom season is in the middle
of October. When you visit there, you can ride a cable car to see the amazing view of the leaves. Also, there are funny stones: loggan stone and Ulsan stone. The loggan stone shakes but never fall. Old legend says that the Ulsan stone came from Ulsan to become a part of Mt.Geumgang, but it could not make it on time so it stayed here. While these beautiful gifts which nature gave us make us amazed, people have also made an artificial waterfall here called Biryong waterfall. Even though humans made this, it goes well with the nature around it.
There is something special to try here. Seoraksan is famous for a specialized bread called Seoraksan-maple bread. This bread is shaped like a maple and is patent registered.

- Bukhansan
Let’s move on to the mountain Bukhan (Bukhansan). This mountain has a monument commemorating King
Jinheung´s tour. In the Silla Dynasty, King Jinheung conquered the area near the Han River. In order to celebrate this, he built a monument on Bukhansan. You can also see the Samo-stone there. Samo refers to the hat people in Chosun dynasty wore. Bukhansanseong, the fortress, is on the mountain, too, and was built during the Baekje dynasty. It is almost 1,900 years old, so it has crumbled a lot, but the place still strongly stands. Bukhansan is located not too far away from Seoul, so it has twice as many visitors as any other mountain.

- Songnisan

Mount Songni (Songnisan) used to be called Mount Gubong (nine mountaintops). Songnisan means a mountain that is far away from the world. In Orisup (the forest 5km away), there
are many animals and plants that are about to be extinct. When you walk up the mountain, you will see a big temple called Beopjusa. It has a large statue of the Buddha. It is about 33m tall, which is the tallest in East Asia.
Also, you can experience a temple stay here, keeping distance from the world. You can clearly see how monks live upright and without any greed. Visiting Songnisan might help you clear out your mind when your thoughts are messed up.

- Naejangsan

Jeollabuk-do, where CBNU is located, has many great mountains, but we can proudly say Mt. Naejang (Naejangsan) is the best of them. Naejansan is in Jeongeup-si, which is only an hour away from Jeonju. A long time ago, in the
time of the Chosun dynasty, Naejangsan was chosen as one of the ‘Eight greatest views of Chosun’. Not only is the mountain itself famous, but the theme village of Ramie is also popular. In that village, you can experience making Korean traditional rice cake and buy a lot of stuff made out of ramie fabric. If you walk around the mountain, you can also find Naejangsan waterpark. It has such a beautiful water fountain. At certain times of day, colored lights and music come along with the water and make a wonderful water show.
In October, all leaves turn red with the Siberian Chrysanthemums. In Jeongeup-si, Okjeong-ho has tons of Siberian Chrysanthemums and holds a festival for them. It will be a great chance to visit there.

- Jirisan
For the last site, there is the highest mountain in the land (besides Mt. Halla), called Mt. Jiri (Jirisan). It is 1,915m high. Chenwangbong is the name of the top. It is also the largest national
park among the 20 national parks. Jirisan means ‘mountain of wise men’ in Chinese letters. There is a valley called Baemsagol, and when following that valley all the way up, you can witness such colorful maples. When you walk up the mountain, you can also find a pine tree that is 1,000 years old, named Chennyeonsong, a natural monument. It’s in Waun-village. Besides this, near Jirisan, Hadong-gun holds really big and famous market called ‘Hwagae’. It has become famous since singer Cho Young-nam made a song about it. What’s more, Hadong-gun has a large tea farm. Teas from Hadong-gun have been known for helping to ease headaches and clear the mind since the Silla dynasty. In this area, they harvest other vegetables and run an online store called ‘Jirisan Kyurumi’.

Fall is coming. The season of harvest and maples is coming right to us. Chestnuts and acorns are getting brown. So many great mountains are also waiting for us to come. Since we have learned about things-to-know, why don’t we go enjoy the natural beauty of these places? Don’t forget to be careful about fire and safety. A wise man once said, “The more you know, the more you see.” Now we are ready to see a lot!
