Recently, the world is full of dark news. The darker the world gets, the more people get interested in healing. From travel to school programs, there are various healing programs. Now, healing is the necessary treatment for us. Let’s discover about healing, which has an undeniable relationship to humans.

●Communication

We can find ‘communication’ among the ways for healing. First of all, we talk to someone when irritated or having trouble in a coffee shop, bar, park, via mobile phone or anywhere. It might be the fact that we’ve healed ourselves unconsciously with communication.

-SNS
Recently, SNS such as Facebook, Twitter, and Cyworld are not only apparently a general trend among people but a crucial part of our lives. SNS is the abbreviation of Social Networking Service. Thus, it’s a kind of service through which people can communicate with each other. Each service has its own different characteristics, but the common thing is that people can be ‘friends’, ‘Ilchon’(in Korean, it means very close to someone), or ‘followers’. Then you can check their recent stories and information. The best thing in SNS is being able to see people’s information in real time and having ease of operation. As if you were talking to someone right next to you, you can know someone’s news immediately even if one of you is in Seoul and the other in Busan, about 400km apart. We are healing ourselves with these advantages of SNS.
People would empathize and be comforted when a piece of writing that can touch their minds is uploaded, like Haemin Sunim’s phrases. For instance, imagine if you broke up with your boyfriend. Then if you saw a writing that describe the situation you were going through and your feelings, you could realize that you’re already the woman and your ex-boyfriend the man in the story. You might know what’s on your ex-boyfriend’s mind that you didn’t know, and if you’ve blamed your ex-boyfriend before, you could realize what’s in his heart. You could see him off well and heal yourself with comfort.
If it were not for SNS, we would have to call someone or try to do something to get those words, but through SNS, out simple thoughts, instead of text messages or calling, have so much influence on people.

- Talk Concert and Talk Program
The new concept of ‘Talk Concert’ showed up on the surface of

our lives about three or four years ago. We thought of ‘a concert’ as a concert of singers or orchestras. A music concert can be healing, of course. However, we’re going to talk about concerts in terms of communication. Maybe the first one was ‘Kim Jae-dong’s Talk Concert.’ After that, a new concept of talk concerts emerged.

As well as talk concerts, there are TV programs focusing on healing such as ‘Joo Byung-jin’s Talk Concert’ and ‘Healing Camp, Why It’s not Happy.’ The host of that program leads guests and audience members through talking. The hosts ask guests questions straightforwardly. They point out incidents which the guests want to hide, unlike other programs that only praise the guests. Guests can face their hurt and problems, and they get answers by asking themselves what they didn’t inquire because of fear. If they do not answer, the hosts give advice. Besides, the hosts praise guests’ outstanding activities. It’s the strategy of ‘the carrot and the stick.’ They feel sad about their hurt continuously, but they’re comforted by their great activities. This makes them cheer up. The host empathizes with guests’ tough stories and comforts them, and the guests have honest talks with the audience and viewers. In the meantime, not only the guests, but also the audience members and viewers who empathize with guests are healed.

- Book
A book is a familiar healing example. Books can develop our thinking skills, make us reflect on ourselves and have doubts about something, and be the factors that change the way of thinking.
The famous books that young people are enthusiastic about for healing these days are ‘It Hurts Because It’s Youth’ by Kim Nan-do and ‘Invinsible Youth’ by Lee Wae-soo. Common things between these books are the comfort for youth and objective critics. The sincere words of the elders point out problems of the young but they pat shoulders softly. In particular, ‘Healing Code’ by Alexander Lloyd and Ben Johnson is a book that focuses on healing on purpose. This book suggests an ultimate healing way and the experience is an example to those of us who’ve been living in this competitive society from birth to death. In addition, they tell us healing postures and the method to solve stress from situations in ten seconds. A book can bring you a healing effect which influences your whole life with a little time and effort.

● Healing Music

Normally people listen to music or sing a song when they get stressed out. Music helps people brush off sickness and gives them power. Recently, using this function of music, healing music appeared as one of the music genres. Healing music is to ‘heal through the music’. This means that we can cure a disease through music. But disease cannot be cured perfectly by listening to music. Precisely speaking, when people are getting tired of routine life, the healing music gives them comfort and abundance of mind.
Acoustical vibration therapy is one of the reasons it heals people. Sending an acoustical vibration stimulus to the body leads to a physiological change in the body.
Through healing music we can expect a variety of effects. Its power is well known under the name music therapy. There is one example to show the effect of music. With two people, one listened to music and the other listened to just vibrations. In the results, when comparing the two situations, the first, who listened to music, reacted in a state of concentration without stress. This is the same reason why pregnant women listen to classical music for prenatal education. Besides this, we anticipate other results like depressurization, diet, quitting smoking, end of constipation, blood pressure stability, improved concentration, and improved skin care. The therapy is also used in hastening recovery, relieving irritation and depression, cerebral palsy treatment, cancer treatment, Alzheimer treatment and so on. Based on the variety of effects, lots of nations are actively using it.
There are representative composers and music which came from inspiration through experience and learning related to psychics or Sufism. Music such as Denis Quinn’s ‘Water Lilies’, Fumio Miyashita’s ‘Wings of Love’, Ralf Bach’s ‘Silver Pastures’, Frederic Delarue’s ‘Celestial Lullaby’, and Wang Sheng Di’s ‘We Have Only One Heart’ are well known to everybody. You can feel their purity and comfort. Most of all, even though you’ve listened to them more than a hundred times, you never get tired of them.
Recently, Korean pop music focusing on healing is increasing. Naul, a member of ‘Brown Eyed Soul’, got to the top of the music charts as soon as he released his new album. He wanted to sing a song to the audience, embracing their spirit.
Other healing music concerts have occurred recently. There are local music programs like the Jincheon Healing Music Festival, and Jeju Healing Music Festival. These are held for the people who live fiercely. In particular, the Jeju Healing Music Festival contains groups from orchestras to indie bands.
Tired people who lose their motivation and who never enjoyed healing music can enjoy it from now on. You will be relieved and cast off your fatigue from your body. You don’t have to find it far away from you. Not long ago, the famous cross over pianist Maksim Mrvica visited CBNU. About 500 people filled the Art Hall, which has a seating capacity of 200. His music was healing to the audience. You can easily find healing music. Also, if the music from TV makes you relieved, that can be a healing music for you!

●Healing Travel

-Temple stay
Temple stay is a program to experience the daily life of Buddhist monks at traditional temples. Primarily, Korea’s traditional temples are located in the mountains. Temple stay can be a program not only to experience traditional temple life alone, but also to escape from the bustle of daily life and enjoy nature. In early days, it was a simple program, just staying in a temple for one or two days. At present, temple stay is run according to a concrete schedule with programs. Among various types of temple stays, to relax, to experience Buddhist culture and to practice asceticism are popular. A temple stay for relaxing has no special program. It helps participants who ache in body and mind to enjoy nature and to have time to recharge themselves. They can enjoy comfortably the life of a mountain temple. The participants in experiential temple stays personally enjoy various activities regarding Korea’s traditional culture and various customs of Buddhism such as BaruGongyang (monastic formal meal), Dado (tea ceremony), tour of Buddhist temple, making temple food and making a lotus lantern. Those activities are popular not only to Koreans, but to foreigners as well. Foreigners take an interest in Buddhist culture and hope to experience those things.
A temple stay to practice asceticism includes a sunrise Buddhist service and Zen meditation. Through those activities, you can self-examine yourself a lot. By experiencing various activities, the participants communicate with nature, self-examine themselves, and come across new culture. At the same time, their minds are naturally healed.
Besides these, other diverse programs are formed newly in every season. Programs are very soft on nature’s atmosphere. Now, more than 120 traditional temples of Korea hold temple stay. About 30 of them provide English interpreters. Also, temple stay was selected as one of the top five successful tour packages by OECD.

-Long distant trips
As the popularity of healing increases, travel packages to highlight healing are appearing. But when you see the schedules of those travel packages, you may realize that they are too tight. The tight travel schedule will be a drag on healing. Through travel, you want to heal yourself if you are tired of daily life and look back on yourself. There are good places matched with the aim of healing travel: Tibet, Baikal Lake, Laos, India and so on. Of course, there is no special standard about a good place for healing travel, but for healing, quiet places where you can feel nature would better than developed cities or urban areas where you can’t avoid noise.
Tibet is located 4,000 meters above sea level in altitude, and it is surrounded by the Himalayan and Kunlun mountains. It is called “the roof of the world”. You can suffer from high-altitude medical problems here, but Tibet has its own charm to help tourists to overcome the pain. Through the regional characteristics, you feel as if you could reach the clouds. When you see the scene in which a yak rests at the lake with its surrounding landscape, you maybe feel nature’s wonder. Tibet’s weather is very changeable and the clouds scud across the sky. Whenever you look upward, you can see a new sky.
The places recommended for healing travel have something in common. Those places are good to meditate and feel nature. If you travel to those places, healing is only a matter of time.

-Short trips
You can enjoy healing travel in the area where you live. The typical place is an arboretum. The woods and the murmur of stream set people’s minds at rest. Arboretums are located throughout the country. The representative arboretums in Jeonbuk are ‘Jeonju Arboretum (Korea Expressway Corporation Arboretum)’ and ‘Jeonbuk Daea Arboretum’.
Gwangneung National Arboretum located in Pocheon is the biggest arboretum in Korea. Besides many kinds of plants, many rare animals such as squirrels, carpinus, cordata, and Korean woodpeckers live there, so if you visit there, you can easily encounter them. Also, water flows along the trail. This arboretum’s natural state has been well-preserved. If you walk around this arboretum, you will receive healthy energy from nature, and your mind and body will recharge for daily life.
Besides the arboretum, visiting museum or café can be good healing travels. Whether short or long, wounded minds are cured through travel. This is a healing travel.

Consulting a doctor and taking medication are not the only healing. We’re healing others and being healed in ways that we didn’t think of. CBNU also shows a cinematic masterpiece every Thursday in CBNU's museum. Not only members of the university but also local residents can enjoy the movies. It is a part of the healing programs. Make your value higher to find your own healing way.
