Students of this department study food engineering and food hygiene based on foundational studies such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, food microbiology, and so on.
Biotechnology is a high-technology field that uses organisms like animals, plants, and microorganisms or diverse biological systems. The Division of Biotechnology has two specialties: Environmental & Bioresource Sciences and Bioresource & Biomolecule Technology.

1) A Best Friend to Animals, the College of Veterinary Medicine
Nowadays a pet is more than just an animal. To some, it can be a life companion, or to others it can be their precious little baby. As these little babies’ numbers are growing, needs for vets are increasing too. The College of Veterinary Medicine of CBNU is where a lot of talented vets have been cultivated. The college, which was established in 1951, proudly presents its 65th anniversary this year. From this February, the college is moving to a new place at the Iksan Campus. With the brand new buildings and laboratories, it is waiting to take the first step as a special college on the special campus.

2) On the Road to Be a Veterinarian
What does it takes to be a veterinarian? First of all, you have to go to the College of Veterinary Medicine. For two years, you have to complete the preparatory courses and then finish the regular course for four years. Therefore, you study a total of six years of education before taking the national examination. If you pass the exam, you get the license to be a vet.
Let’s see more about their six years!
3) What classes are there?
1. Veterinary Parasitology
:In this class, the students examine parasites and hosts with a microscope. By dissecting the host, they get to know more exactly the insides of parasites and study about them. The class is usually conducted along with experimenting. Studying about parasites is sometimes a hard thing to do.
2. Veterinary Toxicology
:As said above, the main theme here is what is “toxic.” Like cancer and other viruses, in this class students study about the cell and its harmful substances along with the counter materials that can protect them from viruses. The purpose of this class is to prevent and cure the toxic substances by examining them.
3. Fish Disease and Clinical
:Its main curriculum is to find the type of disease depending on the fish. During the class, they often dissect fish and see what’s inside of them.

 4) Curious Things about Veterinary Life!
- We asked some questions to an anonymous student from the College of Veterinary Medicine.
1. Do all the veterinary students like animals?
: I can’t say that all of the students like animals, but most of the students seem to like animals. And even if they don’t like animals, six years of a long period with the animals makes them feel more comfortable toward animals.
2.Is there an oath veterinary students do, like the Hippocratic Oath and Nightingale Pledge?
: There wasn’t actually a specific oath. Instead, there was a special thing called “Su hon je.” It is a kind of ritual that was for the animals that were sacrificed for experiments.
3. What was the most interesting animal that you remember during class?
: I remember a Pekinese that we took care of during the class. She was really sick because she was old and lost much of her strength, so we all thought that she wouldn’t make it to the next day. However, she miraculously got up and ran around the room.

5) Endless Story in the Department of Veterinary Medicine
At CBNU, there is a tower for the dead souls of the sacrificed animals. Just like “Su hon je,” this tower is called “Su hon top.” It is located near the animal hospital. It was created based on the shape of a family. In front of the tower there is a memorial stone carved with some words of sorrow and love for animals and humans.
There is a book which has been the hottest book in the online stores: Wildlife Hospital 24 Hours. The book was written by the Department of Veterinary Medicine. It is about 24 hours of urgent wild animal medical center life and the animals that are being treated. The contents are based on the real life situations that happened in the medical center. The heart-warming story is known to many readers nationwide.
