Also, the College of Veterinary Medicine is completely moving to the Iksan Campus before March 2015. In this issue, we will find out more about the College of Environmental & Bioresource Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine, which are located at the Iksan Campus, as well as how they have developed and will develop in the future.

1) Introduction to the College of Environmental & Bioresource Sciences
The College of Environmental & Bioresource Sciences is a specialized college that educates on and studies the environmental and bio-resource area. In 2008, this college was founded in Iksan, which is an area located in the Food Cluster of Korea in accordance with university combination. These days in our society, eco-friendly products and services that are a vital part of mankind are all the rage. This college consists of six buildings and has five departments: Bio Food Technology, Biotechnology, Bio-Resource Distribution Economy, Chinese Medicine Resource, and Ecology Landscape Architecture Design. It was organized with the purpose of cultivating expertise to lead the national food industry in South Korea.
2) Do You Know the Features of Each Department?
The Department of Bio Food Technology was instituted with the purpose of disease prevention through greater emphasis on the functionality of food. Students of this department study food engineering and food hygiene based on foundational studies such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, food microbiology, and so on.
Biotechnology is a high-technology field that uses organisms like animals, plants, and microorganisms or diverse biological systems. The Division of Biotechnology has two specialties: Environmental & Bioresource Sciences and Bioresource & Biomolecule Technology.
Bioresource Distribution Economics is the study of production, distribution and consumption related to food and life resource. This department puts emphasis on analysis of the role of the agrifood industry and the distribution of economic characteristics. The Department of Bioresource Distribution Economy aims at training agrifood logistic economic specialists.
The Department of Chinese Medicine Resource trains students to be competent experts with professional competencies about medicinal herbs and the production of Chinese medicinal resources. This department educates practical academics with the basic science required for Chinese science through wide practical training about medicinal herbs.
The Department of Ecology Landscape Architecture Design is the one and only department involved in ecologic design. This major aims at the coexistence of man and nature. The students study management of design and construction of ecological landscapes.
3) What Business Are They In?
There are a variety of fields for students of the College of Environmental & Bioresource Sciences to go into after graduation. Most of the graduates tend to work in environmental areas, either becoming public officials or becoming specialists in life and ecology after studying the subject in graduate school. For example, many students work at the Rural Development Administration (RDA), the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), and so on. They get a great education and acquire professional qualification while in college so as to make their ways into being specialists.

1) A Best Friend to Animals, the College of Veterinary Medicine
Nowadays a pet is more than just an animal. To some, it can be a life companion, or to others it can be their precious little baby. As these little babies’ numbers are growing, needs for vets are increasing too. The College of Veterinary Medicine of CBNU is where a lot of talented vets have been cultivated. The college, which was established in 1951, proudly presents its 65th anniversary this year. From this February, the college is moving to a new place at the Iksan Campus. With the brand new buildings and laboratories, it is waiting to take the first step as a special college on the special campus.
2) On the Road to Be a Veterinarian
What does it takes to be a veterinarian? First of all, you have to go to the College of Veterinary Medicine. For two years, you have to complete the preparatory courses and then finish the regular course for four years. Therefore, you study a total of six years of education before taking the national examination. If you pass the exam, you get the license to be a vet.

3) What classes are there?
1. Veterinary Parasitology
:In this class, the students examine parasites and hosts with a microscope. By dissecting the host, they get to know more exactly the insides of parasites and study about them. The class is usually conducted along with experimenting. Studying about parasites is sometimes a hard thing to do.
2. Veterinary Toxicology
:As said above, the main theme here is what is “toxic.” Like cancer and other viruses, in this class students study about the cell and its harmful substances along with the counter materials that can protect them from viruses. The purpose of this class is to prevent and cure the toxic substances by examining them.
3. Fish Disease and Clinical
:Its main curriculum is to find the type of disease depending on the fish. During the class, they often dissect fish and see what’s inside of them.
4) Curious Things about Veterinary Life!
- We asked some questions to an anonymous student from the College of Veterinary Medicine.
1. Do all the veterinary students like animals?
: I can’t say that all of the students like animals, but most of the students seem to like animals. And even if they don’t like animals, six years of a long period with the animals makes them feel more comfortable toward animals.
2.Is there an oath veterinary students do, like the Hippocratic Oath and Nightingale Pledge?
: There wasn’t actually a specific oath. Instead, there was a special thing called “Su hon je.” It is a kind of ritual that was for the animals that were sacrificed for experiments.
3. What was the most interesting animal that you remember during class?
: I remember a Pekinese that we took care of during the class. She was really sick because she was old and lost much of her strength, so we all thought that she wouldn’t make it to the next day. However, she miraculously got up and ran around the room.
5) Endless Story in the Department of Veterinary Medicine
At CBNU, there is a tower for the dead souls of the sacrificed animals. Just like “Su hon je,” this tower is called “Su hon top.” It is located near the animal hospital. It was created based on the shape of a family. In front of the tower there is a memorial stone carved with some words of sorrow and love for animals and humans.
There is a book which has been the hottest book in the online stores: Wildlife Hospital 24 Hours. The book was written by the Department of Veterinary Medicine. It is about 24 hours of urgent wild animal medical center life and the animals that are being treated. The contents are based on the real life situations that happened in the medical center. The heart-warming story is known to many readers nationwide.

-Is Iksan Campus a branch school of CBNU?
No. Iksan Campus is not a branch school of CBNU. CBNU has more than one campus. In addition to Jeonju and Iksan, CBNU campuses are located in Gunsan and Gochang. The Eco-green Techno Valley in the Gunsan Saemangeum campus is laid out and leads Green Energy Technology. The Gochang Campus is a Mecca of Hanok architectural design education.
-May I take a course between the Jeonju and Iksan campus?
Yes. That is possible. According to the curriculum of a department and major or personal circumstances, there are instances that you might have to move from the Jeonju campus to the Iksan campus. In that case, you can use the campus bus that runs between the Iksan and Jeonju campuses. However, there is one caution that students have to note. When you make a timetable, you should consider the transportation time between the Iksan and Jeonju campus!
-Is is possible to borrow books between the Iksan campus and Jeonju campus?
Yes. There is a book rental service between the Iksan campus and Jeonju campus for the user's convenience and material usage vitalization. You can rent all materials except for preserved data. If you want to use this service, you can apply for campus rental on the CBNU library homepage. You accept materials in the Jeonju Central Library or Iksan Annex Library in two or three days.
