Introduction to the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences
The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences was founded in 1951 as the College of Agriculture. In 2003 it was given a new name to meet the needs of the 21st century. These days in our society, products and services that promote personal well-being are all the rage, so people are always seeking eco-friendly things. This college consists of five buildings and has 14 departments: Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Economics, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Science, Wood Science & Technology, Forest Environmental Science, Bio-industrial Machinery Engineering, Bioenvironmental Chemistry, Food Science & Technology, Horticultural Science, Crop Production & Technology, Landscape Architecture, Agricultural Engineering and Bioscience and Rural Resources.
What Are the Features of Each Department?
▪ The Department of Agricultural Biology was instituted with the purpose of protecting plant resources from disease and vermin. Students of this department study the pest control and diagnosis of disease and pests. They also study basic biology, entomology, plant pathology, and so on.
▪ The Department of Agricultural Economics teaches how to resolve economic problems in agricultural society. Agricultural Economics is the subject which applies economic knowledge to agriculture.
▪ Do you know the difference between Animal Biotechnology and Animal Science? Animal Biotechnology is where students learn about biotechnology, focusing on animal resources. Animal Science is knowledge about animal breeding and process technology of meat and milk.
▪ Most of Korea is mountainous, and forests are important to us in many ways like purifying air and so on. In addition, the wood industry sustains jobs using lumber. For this, some departments have been established. The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences has the Department of Wood Science & Technology and Forest Environmental Science. The Department of Wood Science is a department that conducts studies for producing useful things like building materials, furniture and instruments in human life. The Department of Forest Environmental Science is a sector that contributes to the conservation of national land through rational management of forest resources.
▪ The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences has two departments related to biological substance. They are the Department of Bio-industrial Machinery Engineering and the Department of Bioenvironmental Chemistry. Bio-industrial Machinery Engineering is an academic discipline that encompasses application of engineering principles and technology for the mechanized production, processing, and utilization of biologically-based resources and food materials. The Department of Bioenvironmental Chemistry trains students who are interested in improving the productivity of agriculture and protecting and managing natural resources.
▪ The Department of Food Science & Technology educates practical academics with basic science required for food science and technology.
▪ The Department of Horticultural Science is designed to educate students in both theory and the practice of breeding, marketing and management of horticultural crops such as vegetables and flowers.
▪ In the Department of Crop Science, students study practical applications and principles of crop production.
▪ The critical roles of Landscape Architecture are creating green belt planning and designing for ecological restoration and natural landscape preservation.
▪ The Department of Bioscience and Rural Resources trains students to be technical professionals with leadership and professional competencies.
▪ Agricultural Engineering covers a wide range of studies, including farm land construction with conservation of land and agricultural water utilization. This major aims at training and cultivating men of ability to solve the engineering problems in rural and biological environments.
Unique Places for Students
-Farm: If you hang around at the College of Agriculture & Life Science, you can see the farm-shaped glass greenhouse. That farm was established on April 1st,1952. It is located in the northern part of the College and is the place where students are able to practice what they learned, like the study of rice cultivation, special crops, flowering plants and vegetables, and fruit growing. Also, it is supposed to research agricultural technology suitable for regional characteristic.
-Research Forests: Research Forests are a practical place for forest experiments. Based on recent research of forests, students work out tree crop gene projects, seedling composition suited to regional characteristics and rational use of forest products. It is utilized by the Department of Forest Environmental Science, Wood Science & Technology and Landscape Architecture. Students of these departments can apply specialized knowledge into practice. It is situated in Deokjin-dong, Jeonju and Byeonsan peninsula, Buan and is used to study forest environmental science, including urban forests and landscape trees. This makes it possible to combine theory with practice. It has great contribution to furthering environmental control and landscape which aims to promote welfare of the people.
-Animal farm: The animal farm was established by the Department of Animal Science in 1954. It moved to the Jeonju campus with shifting of the College of Agriculture & Life Science from Iksan in 1963. By raising domestic animals and experimental animals, students can practice the study of animal science. By applying and developing skills of animal husbandry they produce superb breeding stock and sell it to livestock recipients. The farm aims to popularize the skills of animal science to local society. There is a barn, pigsty, laying house, agricultural equipment house and animal factory.

-Tree-Planting Day Ceremony
The Tree-Planting Day Ceremony is an event of the Department of Forest Environmental Science. On April 5th, Tree-Planting Day, all professors and students gather. They pay tribute to the souls of spirits for the safety and peace of the department. The Tree-Planting Day Ceremony originates from a little bit of a sad story. A few years ago, there was a student who majored in Forest Environmental Science. Unfortunately, he died because of an accident. After that, unfortunate incidents like student injuries occurred continuously. Finally, people considered to do the Korean traditional ritual. They held the ritual called a Tree-Planting Day Ceremony to remember the soul. They planted trees or fertilized a field. Since then, surprisingly, the number of accidents has dramatically decreased. The Tree-Planting Day Ceremony is now a representative event in the Department of Forest Environmental Science every year.
-JOB Stepping-Stone Competition
Does anybody want to know about a real workplace? All members of the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences can participate in the JOB Stepping-Stone Competition. This competition has the intention of informing students about getting a job. Students make teams consisting of four or five members. They visit real sites and interview workers. They also join in on the training and announce their projects. Through this competition, students are able to consider their interests and majors through jobs. During the working period, they receive activity costs. Also, there is prize money given to the winners. It lasts from June 9th to September 3rd. Therefore, it requires patience and passion for the major. If you are a student of the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences, it is a good opportunity to participate in the JOB Stepping-Stone Competition.
What Sort of Jobs Can They Choose?
There are a variety of ways for students of the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences to go after graduation. They can get jobs in research institutions, public corporations, or enterprises. For instance, many students work at the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Other students go to graduate school. They get a great education and acquire professional qualification while in college so as to make their ways into being agricultural specialists. Students who major in the Department of Forest Environmental Science and Food Science & Technology try to complete a course in teacher education to engage in the educational world.
CBNU Ham, the Enterprise of CBNU
CBNU has three representative enterprises. One of them is CBNU Ham, which makes and sells meat with an educational curriculum of the specific department.
CBNU founded and has managed CBNU Ham since 2004.CBNU Ham has a high-quality and eco-friendly meat production process. For this, many professors of the Department of Animal Science have studied to develop it for 30 years. CBNU HAM improves CBNU's status by producing delicious ham. It sells ham in about 660 stores all over the country and raises the recognition of CBNU.
The students whose majors are concerned with CBNU HAM, such as the Department of Animal Science or Food Science & Technology, can experience practical work processes through a school enterprise. Students can participate in production and quality control. They are also trained with new technologies and facilities at CBNU HAM production facilities situated in the fourth building of the College.
